MacKinnon, John Alexander

John Alexander MacKinnon, born 1886, of Beaver Cove, Cape Breton was a farmer who showed a strong interest in his family, in the church and in the surrounding communities. A member of the 94th Argyle Highlanders militia group, MacKinnon enlisted with the 185th Battalion, Cape Breton Highlanders, on May 9, 1916. He died March 21, 1941.

Anderson, Alexander

The family of Alexander and Susan Anderson lived on Poplar Grove Farm, Baddeck. Son Percival William Anderson was born July 7, 1885, and served for 6 years in the 94th Argyll Highlanders before enlisting for service in World War 1 on October 28, 1915. He was killed in action on March 11, 1917.

Mann, Stella

Stella Hilchie Mann (1900-1992) of Gabarus, was the daughter of Captain Stephen and Mrs. Naomi (Grant) Hilchey. She married G. Fred Mann in 1920, and they had five children. Mrs. Mann has spent her life researching the history and families of Gabarus, and has produced five booklets dealing with the history of the village. The papers are rich in material relating to the families of southeastern Cape Breton.

McLennan, Katharine Sophia

Katharine McLennan was born in 1892, the daughter of Senator and Mrs. J.S. MacLennan. She served as a nursing assistant with the French Red Cross during World War 1, and upon her return was appointed Honorary Curator of the Louisbourg Museum. Katharine received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from St. Francis Xavier University in 1971 and in 1972 was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. She died in December 1975.

A native of England, William Chirgwin (1882-1963) came to North Sydney in 1901. He served in the Army, Navy and Merchant Marine in World War I, and the Merchant Marine in World War II. Though he never published a book, he wrote many articles on the history of the Northside area. Miscellaneous papers covering a variety of topics.

Angus McLellan was the son of Donald McLellan. He lived in Grand Mira and served as Secretary of Grand Mira North School. In 1906, he worked for Dominion Coal Company and in 1919 was appointed Justice of the Peace.

The family of Roderick and Mary Morrison lived in St. Esprit, Cape Breton. Born May 12, 1887, their son Kenneth Roderick enlisted with the Canadian Infantry on June 19, 1915, at age 28. He served with the 25th and 40 Battalions before he was killed in action on October 3, 1916.

MacMillan, James
Person

James MacMillan was born in 1915 in Sydney. He was employed at the Sydney Post Office for many years and was in the military service during World War II. Following his retirement from the Post Office, he was Curator at St. Patrick's Museum, Sydney, until his death in 1981.

Malcolm Angus MacLeod was born in Birch Plain to Norman and Annie (Morrison) MacLeod. He married Annie Mae MacDermid and worked as a fisherman, farmer, and labourer, and was well known for being a Gaelic singer. He passed away in 1978.

Crowdis, Edward

Edward Crowdis was born in Baddeck on March 26, 1894, to Henry and Annie (Clarke) Crowdis. He enlisted for the First World War on January 25, 1916 in Sydney, and went on to serve in the 106th Overseas Battalion until he was discharged on April 12, 1919. Upon his return, Edward married Christine McPherson of Cape North and the two lived in Sydney until his death in 1978.

Morrison, Kenneth

Kenneth Morisson of North Framboise was born on May 28, 1874. He married Flora Morrison in 1904, and the two raised a family together. He retired in 1942.
