Charles Parnell Barrington was born in 1770 in Middlesex, England. He married Elizabeth Hayward Budd and the couple had eleven children: Margaret Sibella, Carter, Harriet, Victoria, Christina, Elizabeth Ann, Olivia Mary, John, Sidney William, Henry and Edwin John Carter. Barrington immigrated to Canada where he joined the militia and was stationed first in Quebec and then Charlottetown, P.E.I. He was finally stationed at Sydney, Nova Scotia, holding the position of Captain of the 7th Battalion of the 60th Rifles of Foot. He settled at Sydney Mines in 1817 and brought his family over from England. Barrington died in 1848. Many of the Barrington children and grandchildren remained in Cape Breton. Yorke Henry Ainsley Barrington, son of Edwin, and his son Yorke Cotrill Barrington, became heavily involved in the founding of the Cape Breton coal industry.

Fonds consists of four series: Charles Parnell Barrington (1813-1844), Edwin John Barrington (1851-1880), Yorke Henry Ainsley Barrington (1869-1893) and Yorke Cotril Barrington (1903-1908). Fonds also consists of a letter from Edward Barrington (grandson of Captain Barrington) to his brother and sister from Washington Territory (1865), lineage of the Barrington family, newspaper clippings on the Barrington family, notice regarding installation of an electrically driven booster pump, a trust deed from Helen Jane Catherine Barrington (heir of Edwin Barrington) to Frank Seward Barrington (1885), and deeds to John Barrington.
Records are in no apparent order.
Many of the papers are fragile, ripped and foxed. Sections of photocopied pages are difficult to read.
Further accruals are not expected.
Records were received in four accessions from Hilda Day, Mrs. Y.C. Barrington, and the Old Sydney Society.
