General note
Half of the last page of the preface is missing. Included in the book was a newspaper clipping dated Wednesday April 20, 1966. It is Achadh nan Gaidheal, which was the Gaelic column in The Casket edited by Msgr. Nicholson. A Gaelic song appears in the column.
General note
Compilers were Bernard Gillis and P.J. Nicholson. Bernard Gillis was a fiddler and son of the bard, Malcolm H. Gillis.
Msgr. Nicholson was a native of Beaver Cove, Gaelic scholar and one-time president of St. Francis Xavier University.
General note
Editor, Eachann MacDhughaill (1880-1954), was born on the island of Coll and moved to Glasgow as a young man. He was a prolific writer of Gaelic prose, poetry and essay as well as editing several collections of poetry. In 1936, we won the Bardic Crown a the National Mod. His activism with An Comunn Gàidhealach led the society to appoint him honorary "father" of the Gaelic youth group, Comunn na h-Oigridh.
Malcolm Gillis' songs especially would have been well known to MacDhughaill, especially Mo Nigheann Donn a'Chùil Réidh, which became very popular in Scotland.
General note
Malcolm H. Gillis, also known as "Calum Eòghain" was born in the parish of Southwest Margaree in 1856 to Hugh and Mary Gillis (née Gillis). He iwas a descendant of immigrants from Morar, Scotland. He was school-teacher and is remembered for walking to and from a school in Cheticamp from his home in Gillisdale each weekend, to visit his large family. Gillis was also an accomplished fiddle player and composer of tunes - a talent that was inherited by many of his children. He is best remembered however, for his songs and poetry which often praise the beauties of the Margaree region. His best known works were "Nighean Donn a Chuil Reidh" and "Na Cnuic 's na Glinn" (also called "Am Braighe")
