185th Battalion Cape Breton Highlanders register of recruits ledger 1915-1916

File consists of a register of recruits ledger for 1915-1916 for the 185th Battalion, Cape Breton Highlanders. Entries for each soldier contain: corps, regimental number, name, height, chest measurement (inches), weight (lbs), complexion, eyes, hair, distinctive marks, occupation, religion, parish, county, date, enlistment (place and by whom), and finally approved (place and by whom), and remarks.

Item is a booklet that was handed out during officer training for the 2nd Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton) between September 1975 and May 1976. The booklet was created to consolidate information about the history of the Cape Breton Highlanders and serve as a training medium for study as well as a reference for future regimental history lectures. The booklet contains an introduction by then commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel I.D. MacIntyre and sections that highlight the history of the unit before World War I to the unit as the 2nd Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton).

Collection consists of records related to the Cape Breton Highlanders including documentation spanning a century of service. Various iterations of the unit are included beginning with the 94th Victoria Regiment "Argyll Highlanders," 185th Overseas Battalion Cape Breton Highlanders, Cape Breton Highlanders (World War II), 2nd Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders (Cape Breton Highlanders) as well as records of the Cape Breton Highlanders Association. The records focus heavily on activity during World War 2 and post-war service by members of the Association.

File consists of programs from multiple Cape Breton Highlanders' reunions between 1973 and 1989 as well as a souvenir directory from the 1978 reunion that lists names and addresses of members of the Cape Breton Highlanders association and a program from the Nova Scotia Command, Royal Canadian Legion 33rd bi-annual provincial convention that was held in Whitney Pier, N.S.

File consists of a small booklet containing a roll of honour of the war dead of the Cape Breton Highlanders during World War II. The roll of honour includes each member's regimental number, rank, name, company, date killed, and their origins. The booklet was printed in N.V. Groningen, Holland by Dijkstra's Drukkerij.

Cape Breton Highlanders World War II war diary

File consists of 5 reels of microfilm that contains the full war diary for the Cape Breton Highlanders World War II service.

Unit war diaries were submitted monthly by units and chronicled the daily activities of the unit. In addition to the monthly diary were appendices that consisted orders and instructions issued during the month as well as other information of worth. The diaries cover the periods as follows:
1.) August 26, 1939 - January 31, 1943
2.) February 1, 1943 - October 31, 1943
3.) November 1, 1943 - August 31, 1944
4.) September 1, 1944 - August 31, 1945
5.) September 1, 1945 - January 26, 1946

Cape Breton Highlanders wreath

Item is a photograph of the wreath of poppies placed at the Cassino Memorial in the Cassino War Cemetery by Charles "Sharkey" MacDonald and Ralph Davies. The memorial contains names of the fallen who do not have a grave, including four Cape Breton Highlanders: Lieutenant Rodd, Corporal Jewers, Private B.H. Hedd, and Private A.H. MacLeod.

Cape Breton Highlanders, 1939-1945 booklet

File consists of a publication titled "The Cape Breton Highlanders, 1939-1945" written and compiled by at the time Cape Breton Highlanders Association Ralph S. Davies. The publication provides a summary of the Cape Breton Highlanders regimental history, the war cemeteries where members of the unit who died in the war are buried, a tribute to Honorary Captain and RC Padre Father Alexander Duncan MacDonald, and the honours and awards of the Cape Breton Highlanders won during World War II. Included alongside the publication is a print-out of two pages of an unidentified book titled "The Highland Society of London."

Charles R. "Sharkey" MacDonald

Item is a photograph of Cape Breton Highlander Charles R. "Sharkey" MacDonald standing in a boxing stance. Charles was known as "Sharkey" to his comrades and was known to be a boxer. Sharkey had also won a divisional lightweight boxing championship while the unit was in Holland.
