Cape Breton Highlanders Association

Series consists of records for the Cape Breton Highlanders Association including reunion photographs, newspaper clippings, a publication about the history of the unit, a regimental history, pamphlets from different reunions, minutes of meetings, correspondence, newsletters and membership rolls.

Commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Liberation of Italy

Subseries consists of photographs, correspondence, publications, newspaper clippings and maps relating to the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Liberation of Italy.

In 1975, two members from each Canadian unit who participated in the Italian campaign during World War II were invited to take part in a official Canadian pilgrimage to places around Italy where veterans would tour former battle sites, war graves, towns and cities. In the case of the Cape Breton Highlanders, Charles "Sharkey" MacDonald and Ralph S. Davies were selected to represent the Highlanders.

File consists of a letter from the Cook County Graduate School of Medicine, personal correspondence, letters congratulating him on the publishing of his book “Memoirs of a Cape Breton Doctor”, letters from people telling Dr. MacMillan how much they enjoyed his book and their hopes for a sequel.

File consists of a letter from Doubleday Canada Limited rejecting “Hang the Lantern on the Gate” for publication on August 1st, 1972. File consists of a letter sent by Dr. C. L. MacMillan Jr. to a Mr. and Mrs. Petrie asking for their opinion on a if “Memoirs of a Cape Breton Doctor” has the potential to become a play. File consists of a letter from Dr. MacMillan to Jean speaking about his book, “Memoirs of a Cape Breton Doctor”.

Series consists of personal correspondence, letters of congratulations, speeches that Dr. MacMillan has given on the grand opening of a hospital, at banquets, about the annual festival held in Baddeck, welcome speeches, introductory speeches, on the opening of new schools, giving thanks for an invitation, speech to open a meeting and a speech at the launch of a new memorial park in Baddeck. Series also consists of a column called MacMillan’s Memories, a history of Baddeck Group Alcoholics Anonymous which he is mentioned in, a story about the history of Isaac’s Harbor, a loan statement and 29 photographs including weddings photos, family photos, photos of Dr. MacMillan by himself and with others, photos of a house, the C. Monty MacMillan ferry, and Dr. MacMillan in a horse drawn sleigh.

Ralph Davies correspondence and papers

File consists of correspondence and papers of Cape Breton Highlanders veteran Ralph Davies who was one of two Cape Breton Highlanders veterans who traveled to Italy in 1975 as part of an official Canadian pilgrimage to Italy to mark the 30th anniversary of the liberation of Italy.

Series consists of an original copy of "A Short History & Photographic Record of the Cape Breton Highlanders 185th Overseas Battalion C.E.F," reports, correspondence, a 1915-1916 185th Battalion recruits ledger, casualty forms, nominal rolls for drafts, absentee lists, attestation papers, and reports of the 185th at Witley Camp in England.
