Ledger Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of 136 ledger books created by Philip Robin and Co. (later Charles Robin and Co., then Charles Robin-Collas and Co., then Robin, Jones and Whitman Ltd.) between 1824 and 1959. The ledger book provides summaries of the credits and debits to the account of each person who frequently made purchases or sold goods to the company. The books were updated at the end of each day to include the most recent transactions and payments.

Mortgage Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of five mortgage books that were created by Philip Robin and Co. (later Charles Robin and Co., then Charles Robin-Collas and Co.). The books were used by the company to keep track of debts that were held by customers and provide the names of each borrower, their total loan, and a record of their payments to the company. They are indexed alphabetically.

Daniel McKay

Series consists of documents related the life of Daniel McKay. Mr. McKay struck gold in the Yukon during the gold rush era and eventually moved to Sydney. He built and operated the Klondyke Hotel on 36 Walker (formerly Reserve St.) Street in Sydney.

The series consists of two sub-series. The first reflects his business at the Klondyke Hotel including a ledger and building receipts. The second includes custom documents and receipts from his travel to the Yukon and a map of the Bluenose gold mine.

Textual Records

Series consists of textual records of instructions and souvenir programme marking the opening of the Canso Causeway on August 13, 1955.

Collection contains records from several Dominion municipal departments including: Liquor, electric light, and police.

Collection is several municipal documents including municipal court documents from 1927-36 and 1960, register of bills 1908, public relief accounts, and direct relief records from 1931 to 1932.

News Clippings

Series consists of newspaper clippings related to Dr. Morgan's research interests, publications, committee work and community outreach. Primarily focused on Cape Breton related topics.

Plates from Mining Photographs and Other Pictures: A Selection from the Negatives Archives of Shedden Studio, Glace Bay, Cape Breton

Series C consists of images selected for printing in the 1983 publication Mining Photographs and Other Pictures: A Selection from the Negatives Archives of Shedden Studio, Glace Bay, Cape Breton. The book contains two essays by former Cape Breton University professor, Dr. Don MacGillivrary and by American photographer, writer and teacher Allan Sekula.
The series is arranged as it arrived according to plate number. The corresponding negative number is retained on the negative sleeve. However, the decision to not re-incorporate these negatives into Series C is due to a portion of negatives which retain plate numbers but not negative numbers. Also, some of the negative numbers indicate that the negatives originally belonged to the non-industrial portion of the studio.

Teaching and Research

Series consists of research files and course preparation for various history lectures and presentations related to Dr. Morgan's teaching career. Some of these files include training sessions provided to interpretive staff at the Fortress of Louisbourg, as well course content for his College of Cape Breton / University College of Cape Breton (now Cape Breton University) classes. Photographs included in the files were used as illustrations during the course delivery.

The series consists of photographs, programs, correspondence and promotional materials related to the Bartown Festival held annually in North Sydney.

Series consists of correspondence between Angus and Ignatius and James Nolan, as well as Margaret MacDonald, Cassie Fortune and others. One file (A.7) consists of two letters from Folklorist Helen Creighton asking Angus MacDonald about Rhoddy McLeod's ghost.

Telegram Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of 4 telegram books that were created by Charles Robin-Collas and Co.. The book contains copies of telegrams that were sent to individuals, other businesses, and other company offices. While early records feature a limited number of telegrams that were sent in regards to shipments or urgent business, the telegram books created in later years show that the company used telegram services to place orders, receive quotes for goods, and conduct banking.

Series consists of seven invoice books that were created by Charles Robin-Collas and Co. (later Robin, Jones and Whitman Ltd). The books contain copies of invoices that were provided to companies and individuals that completed business with the Company, and were used as a method of maintaining a record of these transactions. The records within this book are not indexed.

Sundry Persons Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of nine sundry persons books created by Philip Robin and Co. (later Charles Robin and Co., then later Charles Robin-Collas and Co.) to maintain a record of transactions made with infrequent customers or businesses. While the books within the series differ in their contents, the majority feature a listing of customers who made purchases at the company store with a listing of the the cost, and sometimes description, of the goods that they purchased. Other books provide information about fish and egg shipments, crew listings for company fishing boats, and a number of quotes received from other businesses for items like flour and lumber.

Collection contains: Dominion school board minutes 1919-38, school board expenses 1954-56, teachers pay roll 1910-52, and school board minutes 1915-27.

Series is a large collection of financial records from the town of Dominion. This includes tax, rate, and assessment rolls, cashbooks, payrolls, tax ledgers, and expenditures.

Also included is one b&w photograph showing Robert Moffatt (back to camera, dark coat) as part of a delegation meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. Mr. Moffatt is the donor's (Robert Angel) grandfather; a photocopy of a newspaper article re: Robert Moffatt.

Municipal Departments

Items are records from various departments in the Town of Glace Bay. This includes: the school board, police, and the board of health minutes, journals, orders, ledgers, and cashbooks.

Scenic and landscape Photographs

Series consists of coastal scenes primarily in Cape Breton including images of Margaree Valley and the Havenside lighthouse in Louisbourg, NS. This lighthouse is no longer standing in this form.

Portraits of DOSCO Officials

Series consists of 130 individual portraits of mangers and administrative staff from the Dominion Coal and Steel Company. Majority of the portraits have full names or a surname. See Item Level Inventory.

Articles and Speeches

Series consists of research notes, writing drafts, completed presentations, and published articles related to Dr. Morgan's academic research as well as community service. Some of this content would be found in published monographs by Dr. Morgan or in published anthologies related to Cape Breton history.

Day Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of 142 day books that were created by Philip Robin and Co. (later Charles Robin and Co., then Charles Robin-Collas and Co, then Robin, Jones and Whitman Ltd.) in their Cape Breton offices. The books feature listings of transactions between the company and its clients and, less frequently, other businesses. Transaction listings most commonly include the name of the individual who made a purchase, a list of the items that they purchased and their cost, and the individual's company account number. In some cases, the account number has been omitted.

Day books were frequently used by bookkeepers during this time period to record all company transactions. At the end of each day, the information that was collected in the day book would then be recorded in the appropriate ledgers.

Time Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of six time books which were used in the Cheticamp office of Charles Robin-Collas and Co. (later Robin, Jones and Whitman Ltd.). The books were used as a method of maintaining record of employees and the hours that they worked on a weekly basis, while also providing indication of whether or not the employee was paid. These books demonstrate that both men and women from the community were employed during this time period.

Sales Books, Robin, Jones, and Whitman Ltd.

Series consists of four sales books that were created in Cape Breton offices of Robin, Jones and Whitman Ltd.. The sales books provide daily records of sales made with cash and company credit, purchases of fish, and returns. At the end of each month, a recapitulation of sales is made, providing a daily summary of total profit from all of the aforementioned sales and purchases.

Due to a lack of indicator, the exact location of the office in which these books were created is unknown.
