MacDonald was born in Lochaber, Scotland in 1801. He was ordained in Scotland in 1824 and after serving as parish priest in Moidart, immigrated to Cape Breton where, in 1842, he became parish priest in Mabou and Vicar General to the bishop of Arichat.
