Fonds consists of documents relating to research on Gaelic Culture in Nova Scotia and other items written by Ms. MacKinnon. Papers include:

  1. Manuscript copy of thesis: “A Study of the History and Traditions of the Highland Scot in Nova Scotia.” This includes the Gaelic transcription of the folktale "Cath nan Eun" by Hughie Dan MacDonnell and mentions other stories and storytellers of the time. MacKinnon also makes mention of well known singers and includes transcriptions of their songs, 1964 Typescript, 155 pages.

  2. An Appraisal of the Gaelic Collection in Cape Bretoniana. Refer also to bound copy: Reports file - College of Cape Breton. 1964. Hand-written and typescript, 10 pages.
  3. Menus and toasts in Gaelic, and correspondence concerning them. Original, typescript and printed, 27 pages. Two clippings of toasts printed in Scottish newspapers were in the custody of John A. MacDougall.

Fonds consists of "The Spanish Treasure Ship of Mull", a story of the "Florida" a galleon of the Spanish Armada which was blown up and sunk off the coast of Mull by Donald Glas MacLean in 1588. The story is closely connected to the story of the "Doideag Mhuilleach" or Mull Witch who was said to have worked for the MacLeans of Duart in using her powers to destroy the ship.

Fonds consists of the Gaelic poem "Druim an-t-Saoghail" with English translation, both versions signed by the author. Because of this poem, MacDougall was awarded the Bardic Crown at the Mod in Dunoon in 1968. Rev. MacDougall of Stirling, Scotland is the author of Braisde Latharna (The Brooch of Lorne).

John Norman MacDonald fonds

Fonds consists of a number of songs collected by Reverend John Norman MacDonald in the summer of 1952. This manuscript was afterwards borrowed by a John MacRury, another Minister, who unwarrantably copied some of the songs and sent them to be printed in the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness. The songs contained in this manuscript collection were obtained from various sources; many of them were taken down from the recitation of various people in Uist and elsewhere at intervales beginning in the year 1874 up to the present.

This fonds consists of records relating to the architecture in Inverness County and post war immigration of the Dutch to Inverness County. Brother Paul Sterk was born in Deventer, Holland in 1934; in 1954, he came to New Glasgow to teach carpentry with seven other brothers of the Congregation of the Brothers of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. In 1964, he became Director of students' residence at Mabou and in 1965, Superior of Mary's Hill and the Brother's Farm. In 1987 he retired and returned to Holland in 1993.
