Thomas J. Brown fonds

Fonds consists of Brown’s collection of mining documents, the manuscript for his book, Place Names of Nova Scotia as well as an undated mining manuscript. Also included is a copy of the poem The Mayflower, the book Gaelic Lessons for Beginners, a scroll addressed to E.G. McKay, a leather nameplate, newspaper clippings and correspondence.

Series consists of one binder containing documents which outline the early history of coal mining and the coal trade in Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia. Included in the binder is a detailed timeline of coal mining on the Island, documents related to the Duke of York’s lease on all coal resources in Nova Scotia, copies of official correspondence, reports, memoranda, legal acts, union memos and an 1876 Memo of Strike by miners at the General Mining Association (GMA) in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia.

firm of Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, was granted a monopoly on
the Nova Scotian coal reserves by the Duke of York in 1827. The
monopoly was rescinded in 1857, but operations continued until

    were taken over between 1893 and 1900 by the Dominion Coal
    Company. Operations on the northern side of the Sydney
    Coalfield were purchased by the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal

Item is a photograph taken in the early years at Dominion No. 1 Colliery. Man second from left was Joe Hall, father of Charlie and Ralph Hall who came here in 1900; the man next to Mr. Hall is reported to be Gilbert Watson who later moved to New Waterford and was shot and seriously injured during the Davis Day Riot at Waterford Lake Power Plant when William Davis was killed. The big man on the extreme right was Big Frank Boutilier from Gardiner Mines, the engine operator. The young man, third from the right was blacksmith Neil Graham, son of Dominion's first Deputy Mayor Dan Graham, and father of Walter Graham who was killed at No. 26 surface railroad on 2 December 1972.
