This interview consists of an interview with Rita Joe, conducted by Mary Rose Julian in the Mi’kmaw and English language.

Side A:
Rita Joe answers questions about her experiences with writing, publishing, and presenting her work to multiple audiences (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous). She discusses her works and reads a few of them out to Mary. She tells of Sarah Denny helping her with overcoming her fear with presenting by giving her a traditional medicine, Mi’kwesu’skl (Flag Root). Rita shares her views and beliefs in preserving and spreading knowledge of the Mi’kmaw language and culture. She also talks about raising children and her husband Frank Joe. Rita shares her experience growing up in the foster care system and in the residential school.

Side B:
The interview continues. Mary and Rita talk about centralization, parkinson’s disease, Rita’s unpublished and published works, Frank Joe, death, dreams, and Rita does readings of her unpublished songs and poems.
