Biographical history

Stephen Leacock was born in England in 1869 and came to Canada at an early age. In 1903, he was appointed a lecturer in political science at McGill University and head of the department in 1908, a position he held until his retirement in 1936. He was the author of many books but it was as a humorist that he achieved his greatest reputation. He became perhaps the best known humorist in the English speaking world. He died on March 28, 1944.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of handwritten manuscripts by Mr. Leacock, articles from various publications, a scrapbook of Mr. Leacock on political economy, miscellaneous newspaper clippings.
Papers include:
A. 1) Handwritten manuscripts by Mr. Leacock: “Abdul Aziz Has His”, “The Drama as it Was and Is”, “Whose Move is It?”, “Should Bachelors be Taxed to Extinction” c. 1910-1915 together with price list (1946) for same. Original, 121 pages
2) Canada Vol. 1 #1, January 13, 1906 used as a scrapbook by Colin Forbes and containing his photograph. [Photographic Archives Accession #79-6-2986]
