Molten iron ran down the trough, centre, which was cleaned after each cast. Hardened iron was removed from the trough and deposited in a scrap car, right, and eventually re-used.

Stockpiles of raw materials for the furnace are at right. A grab on the brown bridge moved raw materials from the stockpiles into a transfer car. This dumped the material into the bins from where it was loaded into "skip buckets," moving up a skip hoist for eventual use in the furnace. Materials included coke, iron ore, and limestone.
