    General note

Transcription for Track 2a: Air A’ Cheud Latha Don t-Samhradh
    Informant: John Alec MacAskill
    Composer: Sam Patterson, Stirling, CB

This local song was composed by Sam Patterson of Stirling, Richmond County. It is composed for his brother who went to work in the lumber camps (Ferguson, 1977) but the author phrases the song as though it was written by his brother relating the hardships of living in the camps.

(Air: Òran Do Ghunna Ga ‘n Ainm Nic Coiseam, Donchadh Bàn Mac An t-Saoir / A Song to A Gun Named ‘Nic Còisim’, Duncan Ban MacIntyre
Original song can be found in “Sàr Obair Nam Bàrd Gaidhealach / The Beauties of Gaelic Poetry)

Sèist: Ho ro mo chuid chuideachd thu,
‘Sann leam bu mhiann bhith cuide ruibh,
Gum b’annsa leam bhith cuide ris,
    A’ chuideachd nach eil gruamach.

    ‘S a’ cheud latha dhen t-samhradh,
Gur ann a dh’fhàg mi Framboise,
Tha nis an darna geamhradh ann,
‘S gu bheil mi ‘n geall gur fuar e.

Nuair a cheannaich mi mo phlangaidean,
‘S a chaidh mi ‘steach don champa leoth’,
‘S e liath reodhadh bu chonnlach dhomh,
‘S na longairean bu chruaidh iad.

Nan robh fhios aig mo mhàthair,
Mo leabaidh is e gun a càradh,
Gur e a cridh’ bhiodh craiteach,
    Oir b’àbhaist dhi bhith truasail.

Ach ‘s an Nollaig ‘s a’ Bhliadhn’ Ùir’
A‘ niste car na dlùth dhuinn,
Oir thig iad beag mo shunnd
Is mi ‘g ionndrainn na bheil bhuam dhiubh

    Ach, cha b’ionnan mar a b’àbhaist,
Nuair bha mi maille rim chàirdean,
    Bhiodh glainneachan gan tràghadh,
‘S tè shlainte ‘dol mun cuairt dhuinn.

    ‘S a’ mhadainn ‘n àm dhomh èirigh,
‘S a sheall mi air na speuran,
Bha sneachd air bhàrr nan geugan,
    Ach b’eiginn leam ‘bhith gluasad.

Mo cheud soraidh chum an àite,
    Anns an deachaidh m’àrach,
Cha chluinn mi ‘seo guth Gàidhlig,
    Ach graman’ mu mo chluasan.

Gur mis’ a tha air m’eigneachadh,
    Dhan chogadh is dhan t-saighdearachd,
Nuair a thig an call gu signigeadh,
Gun faighneachd air fhear buan iad.

Tha e gu cianail bhith marbhadh,
    No èisdeachd air gu dearbha,
    Ach feumaidh sinn ri dearbhadh,
Nach toir an nàmhaid buaidh oirnn.
