      General note

Transcription for Track 5b: An Tè Bhàn

Composer: Rev. Murdo Smith, Leurbost, Isle of Lewis (b. 1880)
      Informant: Donald John MacDermaid
      Traditional
A sailor laments having to leave his sweetheart behind and with every swan and every seagull he sees on the sea, he sends his blessings home to her.

Sèist: Tè bhàn, tè bhàn, tè bhuidhe bhàn,
Tè bhàn a rinn mo bhuaireadh,
Cha chreid mi-fèin nach faigh mi làmh,
      Tè bhàn as àille cuailean.

Gur mis’ tha cianail nam mo thàmh,
An tràth seo ort a’ smaointinn,
Nam biodh an cuan a thalamh tràight’,
      Gu ruiginn tràth Diluain thu.

‘S bho ‘n rinn mi gluasad às an àit’,
‘S an robh mi làmh rim ghruagach,
      Tha m’inntinn luasganach gun tàmh,
Gun chàil a thogas suas i.

      Nam bithinnsa mar eala bhàin,
      A shnàmhas thar nan cuantan,
      Gum bithinn oidhche riutsa làmh,
      Is càch nan cadal suaimhneach.

‘S gach eala bhàn a thèid air snàmh,
      Gach faoileag bhàrr nan cuantan,
      A’ giùlain uamsa soraidh slàn,
Don àit’ ‘s am bheil mo ghruagach.

Gach creag us allt is cnoc is gleann,
Air feadh nam beann ‘s na ghluais sinn,
‘Toirt fianais air na thuirt sinn ann,
Ma bhios am bann air fhuasgladh.
